None of this changes the simple facts, it isn't ironic. To take your example - it's a free ride when you've already paid - your explanation is utter nonsense, why should fate or circumstance dictate that she have a free ride? can she reasonably expect to have a free ride? if she was fated to recieve a free ride then adversity of fate could confound her but if she expected a free ride why did she pay. Ms Morisette accepts the error, why do you know better than her?

A synonym of ironic is incongruous which itself can mean absurd, what incongruous can mean has no bearing on what ironic means there is merely a tenuous connection. anyway... apparent adversity of fate- so misfortune of fate- again fate has dealt someone a bad hand... ok, take the plane ride guy. how is it not ironic that he dies on his very first plane ride?? and the comment itself...
